Akpabio, Abbas Recall Assembly for Emergency Meeting

According to a circular signed by the Clerk, Chinedu Akubueze, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has called for an emergency meeting of the Senate to be held on Wednesday, July 31.

The “National Importance” meeting comes just hours before the commencement of the planned nationwide protests against hunger and bad governance.

The National Assembly had begun a seven-week recess. It was expected to reconvene on September 17, but with a nationwide protest looming, the Senate leadership directed that all Senators “make all necessary arrangements to attend the meeting as issues of national importance will be discussed.”

Similarly, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has summoned lawmakers back from their annual recess for an emergency plenary session scheduled for the same date.

According to the Speaker, the session aims to “focus on critical matters requiring immediate legislative attention.”

“Additionally, the reconvening will facilitate a significant engagement with young Nigerians through a town hall meeting hosted by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen,” House spokesman Akin Rotimi Jr said.
