Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President and Chairman of the 10th National Assembly, has stated that Nigeria was on “life support” when President Bola Tinubu took office in May 2023.
Speaking at his 2024 Constituency Briefing and Empowerment Programme, which was held at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, Akpabio, the senatorial district representative for Akwa Ibom Northwest, urged Nigerians, especially those in Akwa Ibom State, to continue supporting President Tinubu in his efforts to address the country’s economic problems.
His attitude follows Tinubu’s ongoing substantial reforms, which include the introduction of tax bills, the elimination of fuel subsidies, the floating of the naira, and others.
Akpabio recalled discussing the status of the economy left over from the previous administration with President Tinubu.
“When Asiwaju Bola Tinubu assumed power, Nigeria was on life support. “Are you excited about being president after seeing the economy left behind by Emefiele?” I once questioned him. “I have to admit, I had no idea it was this bad,” he said.
The president of the Senate was upbeat about the current economic reforms, pointing out that although they might be unpleasant, they are essential for long-term progress.
“You will do it once more for Nigeria, just as you did in Lagos. It will just take time. We pray that God would give you the discernment to guide us to El Dorado.”
He counselled recipients to use their empowerment tools to improve their families’ financial situation rather than selling them.
“There shouldn’t be a stampede because we have enough food to give out. Other senatorial districts in the state are also receiving these things, in addition to Ikot Ekpene.
“Your assistance has motivated us to pursue excellence while also improving our educational experience. I appreciate your steadfast support.”
Governor Umo Eno was praised by Akpabio for fostering inclusivity and harmony in Akwa Ibom.
“Development is impossible in the absence of peace. Regardless of party affinities, the governor has welcomed everyone in Akwa Ibom.”
He also announced an extra 1,500 bags of rice for the PDP State Chairman and thanked the governor’s Christmas gift of 1,000 bags to the state’s APC family.
Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro was commended by Akpabio for promoting harmony within the Senate.
“Regardless of political affiliation, every senator has an equal voice. Though it should be constructive, opposition is beneficial.”
According to Senator Abba Moro, Akpabio is a leader who is dedicated to giving his people more authority.
“Knowing what to give people for long-term benefits instead of immediate gratification requires wisdom.”
The Senate Committee on NDDC Chairman, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, described the empowerment initiative as “mega, marvellous, and magnificent.”
Key political and community figures, like Senator Ita Enang (APC Chieftain), Senator Ekong Sampson (Akwa Ibom South), Obongemem Ekperikpo Ekpo (Minister of Petroleum Resources, Gas), and Essien Udim, the Paramount Rulers of Ikot Ekpene, attended the occasion.
Akpabio concluded by reiterating the value of teamwork in creating a better Nigeria and promising constituents ongoing representation and development-oriented projects.
