Secretary to the Government of Nigeria, Senator George Akume, said on Sunday that it’s not time for the northern part of Nigeria to have the presidency in 2027, warning that it could harm the nation’s unity.
Akume advised northern politicians to hold off until 2031 if they want to run for president, as he believes it’s important to let the South have the chance to lead for the next eight years.
“We should not risk damaging our country for personal ambitions. Let’s keep the peace and allow the leadership to reside in the south for this period.” He said.
He acknowledged that many groups are forming alliances to take power from the ruling APC party and succeed President Bola Tinubu in 2027. However, he stressed that northern politicians should ensure their candidates come from the south to promote stability and unity.
He expressed confidence that President Tinubu, being from the south, should be allowed for a second term, and he encouraged those from the north to look beyond the next general elections.
Akume hailed the president’s decisions over the past 17 months, including recent tax reforms, believing these changes would ultimately benefit the country. He urged Nigerians to support these reforms as they go through the necessary legislative procedures, stressing that they are designed with the nation’s best interest in mind.
