In a repeat of last year’s showpiece, Carlos Alcaraz retained his Wimbledon crown after he cruised past an out-of-sorts Novak Djokovic. It failed to live up to the blockbuster of 12 months ago, but the Spaniard wouldn’t mind as he secured his fourth Grand Slam title.
Alcaraz showed some nervousness as he squandered three championship points on his serve, with Djokovic taking advantage to take the set to a tie-breaker, but it was the defending champion who held his arms aloft after the Serb sent a backhand into the net to hand victory to Alcaraz in a 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4) win.
“Honestly, it is a dream for me winning this trophy,” said Alcaraz.
“I did an interview when I was 11 and I said my dream is to win Wimbledon.”
For the second year running, Djokovic attempt to equal Roger Federer’s record eight-title haul fell through but he was gracious enough to share a warm embrace with his much younger colleague at the net.
Alcaraz made his way to the players’ box and was embraced by his team and family, marking his 14th consecutive match victory at Wimbledon.
This latest triumph extends his Grand Slam finals record to 4-0. He also became the youngest man to win Wimbledon and the French Open in the same year.
