Algeria has officially ended its bid to join the BRICS economic group while continuing its membership in the BRICS Development Bank, as reported by the Algerian newspaper El Moudjahid, which cited government sources.
This decision follows recent speculation that BRICS member states had approached Algeria regarding potential membership. However, El Moudjahid has confirmed that Algeria is no longer pursuing membership, with officials stating that the “BRICS membership file is closed for the Algerian authorities.”
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had previously indicated that the country would not seek BRICS membership again after its exclusion from the August 2023 summit in Johannesburg, where six new members were welcomed. The Algerian government expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of clear reasoning behind its exclusion, criticising the BRICS group for its “absurd selection logic” and failure to adopt a more inclusive approach.
Despite this setback, Algeria remains committed to global economic frameworks and multilateral cooperation. The report noted, “Algeria has definitively turned the page” on BRICS membership while continuing to advocate for a multipolar approach in international relations through platforms such as the UN Security Council and the Non-Aligned Movement.
Significantly, Algeria was admitted into the BRICS Development Bank last month, thereby strengthening its economic ties with the group. This membership, announced by the Algerian Ministry of Finance in September, enables the country to collaborate on vital development projects in emerging markets, even amid political disagreements that hinder full BRICS integration.
