Algeria Holds France Accountable for Recognising Western Sahara Autonomy Plan

Algeria has expressed regret and denunciation regarding the French government’s decision to recognise an autonomy plan for the Western Sahara region “within Moroccan sovereignty.”

According to reports, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: “Former and current colonial powers seem to know how to align, understand and assist one another.”

The statement further criticised the French decision as being based on questionable political calculations and unethical assumptions, arguing that these interpretations lack legal soundness.

The ministry contended that this choice does not contribute to a peaceful resolution of the Western Sahara issue but rather exacerbates the stagnation and deadlock that have persisted due to Morocco’s autonomy plan over the past 17 years.

“At a time when the United Nations is intensifying efforts to inject new momentum into finding a political settlement to the Western Sahara conflict, the French decision contradicts these efforts, hampers their implementation, and clashes with the overarching interest of peace, security, and stability in the region,” the statement explained.
