The body of The Gambia’s late vice-president, who died in India while receiving treatment last week, will be returned home on Saturday, according to the government. Alieu Badara Joof had been in office for only nine months.

President Adama Barrow paid respect to his late deputy, characterising him as a dedicated and committed public worker who touched the lives of many Gambians.

Mr Joof’s body will be received in a spectacular military ceremony before being brought to a mortuary in the capital, Banjul.

The body will lie in state on Monday before the funeral later that day, according to the authorities.

President Adama Barrow had earlier proclaimed a 7-day national mourning period beginning on Tuesday, with all flags flying half-mast, according to a statement made by The Gambia Government Spokesperson and Presidential Diaspora Adviser, Ebrima G. Sankareh.

The administration, however, underlined that the week-long mourning should not be interpreted as a public holiday or an excuse to be absent from work.

According to the statement, the 7-day period of mourning would include displaying the Gambian flag at half mast, signing a book of condolences at the Presidency, and praying to Almighty Allah to have mercy on the soul of the former Vice President. All government buildings and schools remain open.
