Aliko Dangote, the president of Dangote Group, has donated N1.5 billion to aid relief efforts for flood victims in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno state.
The recent floods that swept through Maiduguri after the Alau Dam broke, wreaked havoc on its residents, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes in the Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin areas.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), over 30 people have lost their lives, and more than 400,000 individuals have been displaced as a result of the flooding in the state capital.
The Borno State government has established camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the state to provide shelter and assistance to those affected by the floods.
In a show of support for the victims, Dangote visited the flood-affected areas, and announced a donation of N1.5 billion to aid in relief efforts.
Dangote stated, “I just want to clarify, we have this flood committee. NEMA wrote us a letter, so we sat down and approved N1 billion to NEMA to work with the Borno state government.
“On top of that, the Aliko Dangote Foundation will also put in additional N500 million, so that’s N1.5 billion,” Dangote announced.
