A Danish court has delivered a verdict sentencing Akinkunmi Amoo, a former star of the Nigerian Golden Eaglets and forward for FC Copenhagen in Denmark, to one year in prison over allegations of sexual assault.
Renowned Football reporter, Osasu Obayiuwana, confirmed the news of Amoo’s sentencing in a tweet. Osasu tweeted, “Breaking: Akinkunmi Amoo, the @FCKobenhavn striker, was given a one-year jail sentence by a Copenhagen court for sexual assault on Friday. Amoo is appealing the decision.”
The winger has faced a storm of accusations, with Danish authorities filing criminal charges against him in April, July, and August of 2022. He was arrested on September 10, 2022, and subsequently released on bail on October 7.
Details of Friday’s trial were reported by the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet. According to the publication, the trial, which spanned most of June, concluded with a verdict in the Copenhagen District Court. Amoo was found guilty of all three charges: rape in a sexual relationship other than intercourse, attempted rape, and violations against two other women.
As the judgment was delivered, Amoo stood in the middle of the room, visibly shaken. He received an unconditional prison sentence of one year.
In the same case, the court extended the name ban due to the defense and the convicted party appealing the verdict on the spot. Although Ekstra Bladet protested against the continued name ban, the court upheld it. The date for the appeal hearing has not been announced yet.
Amoo, a 21-year-old player, was a member of the Nigerian Golden Eaglets squad that achieved fourth place at the 2019 U-17 AFCON. He also participated in the U-17 World Cup, where the Eaglets were eliminated in the round of 16.
Following his impressive performances in the World Cup, he secured a transfer to Swedish club Hammarby before joining FC Copenhagen in January 2022 for a fee of 4.4 million.
However, during the previous season, he made only two league appearances for his Danish team.
