The Anambra State government in Nigeria, through the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has arrested Esther Obidigwe and her two children, Ozioma Obidigwe and Obuka Obidigwe, for assaulting their father.

The arrest followed a report made by the 75-year-old victim, Romanus Obidigwe, to the ministry. In a statement at the commissioner’s office, Obidigwe, a retired senior civil servant, recounted that his family had a history of abusing him.

The specific incident in question occurred when his daughter, Ozioma, sold his firewood without his permission. When Obidigwe confronted her about it, he was attacked by his children, tied up, and beaten with a rod.

Obidigwe also mentioned that his family had stopped providing him with food, which he accepted as a form of punishment.

Additionally, he accused his son, Obuka, of stealing from him, including claiming his retirement benefits from the local government.

The elderly man expressed his regret over the peacekeeping compromise he made with his wife, who has not engaged in any sexual relations with him since 2000.

Obidigwe noted that the abuse only ceased after the intervention of a neighbor, and he was subsequently locked out of his home.

When questioned about the assault, Obuka denied involvement, Esther Obidigwe admitted to the crime, and Ozioma claimed that her father’s actions were the cause of the incident.

Hon. Ify Obinabo, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, expressed her outrage over the incident and vowed to ensure that justice is served for the victim.

Hon. Obinabo emphasized that the current administration is committed to upholding justice and warned the public against criminal behavior.

She highlighted that her ministry is dedicated not only to women and children but also to the social welfare of all individuals.

As of the time of this report, the three individuals have been handed over to the police for interrogation and will face charges in court.
