The Anambra State Government has introduced a new security directive requiring hotel guests and tenants to provide valid identification as part of efforts to bolster security across the state.
The directive, issued by the Office of the Special Adviser on Community Security, was made public through a statement by Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, on Friday.
Under the new regulation, all hotel guests must present a government-issued ID—such as a National Identity Card, International Passport, or Voter’s Card—upon check-in.
Hotel management is mandated to photocopy these documents and submit them to the President General of the community, who will then forward them to the local government chairman and state authorities.

Similarly, landlords must register their tenants by obtaining a tenant registration form from their community’s President General. Tenants are required to fill out the form using a valid ID before moving in.
The Anambra State Government warned that failure to comply with this directive could lead to severe consequences. Hotel owners who do not follow the ID verification process risk losing their facilities, while landlords who fail to submit completed tenant registration forms could face property forfeiture and legal action.
The directive also assigns new security responsibilities to President Generals of Town Unions. They will now serve as chairmen of the Agunaechemba security committee in their respective communities.
Their responsibilities include overseeing daily security operations in their communities, ensuring compliance with the state’s security measures, and submitting detailed monthly reports to the government. Failure to submit reports may result in suspension and further sanctions.
As part of a broader strategy to combat crime, the state government has introduced a whistleblowing policy encouraging residents to report suspicious activities, including kidnapping cases.
Individuals who provide credible information leading to arrests will receive monetary rewards starting from N5 million.
The statement emphasised that these security measures aim to enhance safety for residents and visitors in Anambra State.
The government has called on hotel operators, landlords, and community leaders to fully cooperate for the effective implementation of the directive.
