The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Anambra State has issued a press release following an emergency executive council meeting.
The meeting was called in response to a distressing incident involving the kidnap and assault of Dr. Ofodile Ekweogwu, a Consultant Neurosurgeon, by armed men identified as Anambra State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) policemen.
In the statement signed by State Chairman, Dr. Jane Ezeonu, and the Secretary, Dr. Ifeanaeme Frank, “Dr. Ekweogwu had provided medical care to Corporal Okona Stephen Ifeanyi, a police officer, who subsequently refused to settle his medical bills.”
The NMA condemned the assault and demanded the arrest, suspension, and trial of the perpetrators within 72 hours, warning of legal action if demands are not met.
The association also appreciated the prompt intervention of the Area Commander and the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, as well as the support of the Executive Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, in resolving the matter quickly.
