The Anambra State Police Command in Southeastern Nigeria has launched a determined initiative to reduce crime by 30% in 2025. This was announced by Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono Itam during a press briefing on January 7, 2025, where he outlined the command’s achievements in reducing crime over the past year.
Commissioner Itam called for the collaboration of stakeholders, including community leaders, to help achieve this ambitious goal. He stressed that securing public cooperation is vital for effective policing and crime reduction.
In 2024, the police achieved notable successes, including the arrest of over 325 suspects involved in crimes such as murder, kidnapping, and cultism. Among those arrested was “Pablo,” a notorious kidnapper who had been terrorising communities in Ihiala, Enugu, and Delta States.
The police also seized a large cache of weapons, including over 100 firearms, 43 unexploded IEDs, and nearly 3,000 rounds of ammunition. Additionally, 14 kidnapping victims were rescued, and 15 convictions were secured. A significant operation in December dismantled a criminal camp in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, leading to the destruction of criminals’ hideouts.
The police also arrested an 18-year-old named Miracle Mwakalor in possession of an AK-47 rifle, aiding investigations into gang activities. In a compassionate effort, the police rescued three children stolen from Bauchi State, with authorities calling on the public to assist in reuniting them with their families.
Commissioner Itam thanked the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for their support, reaffirming the commitment of the Anambra Police to enhancing safety and security in the state.
