Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti addressed concerns about Kylian Mbappe’s form, emphasizing that the striker’s struggles reflect broader inconsistencies within the team.
Speaking ahead of Real Madrid’s La Liga clash with Getafe, Ancelotti defended the French forward, who has faced criticism after missing a penalty in Madrid’s midweek Champions League loss to Liverpool. It marked Real’s third defeat in five European matches, and Mbappe has scored only twice in his last nine games for the club.
“Mbappe’s problem is the problem that we all have,” said Ancelotti. “It’s not a problem about one player, the problem that we have is one of a team that has not been capable of being consistent. It’s not a problem about one player.”
Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid in the summer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, has scored eight goals this season but continues to adapt to his new surroundings. Ancelotti stressed that Mbappe’s performance should be evaluated in context, including injuries to key teammates like Vinicius Junior and Eder Militao.
The coach dismissed suggestions that Mbappe is demoralised, despite missing the last two France squad lists and grappling with off-field challenges. “He knows he has to improve, as do we all,” said Ancelotti.
Real Madrid currently sits second in La Liga, four points behind Barcelona with a game in hand. Ancelotti assured fans that the team remains focused on finding solutions.
“I am like Mbappe; I’m trying to give my best version,” Ancelotti concluded. “Results say that I have not been capable of doing that. I’m not happy… but I’m convinced we will fix it, like we always fix it.
