Legendary Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo has won her fourth Grammy, picking up the World Music Album award at the 2020 Grammys which held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 26.
She won the category for her 10-track album “Celia,” over Bokanté & Metropole’s “What Heat,” Altin Gun’s “Gece,” Natahalie Joachim and Spektral Quartet’s “Fanm D’Ayiti,” and Burna Boy’s “African Giant,” an album in which Kidjo herself featured in.
She dedicated the award to Nigeria’s Burna Boy in her acceptance speech, describing him as an African luminary changing the perception of the continent through his music.
“This is for Burna Boy. Burna Boy is among those young artistes that come from Africa that is changing the away our continent is perceived and the way African music has been the bedrock of every music.”
She also treated the audience to a live rendition of her 2002 classic, ‘Afrika’ off the album “Black Ivory Soul” at the event.
Angelique Kidjo first won the award in 2008 for “Djin Djin.” In 2015, she won the category for “Eve,” her tribute to African women, and picked it up again in 2016 for her 11-track 2015 album, “Sings.”
