Another Earthquake Rattles Kariba

Another earthquake hit Kariba on Friday with the epicentre estimated to be in Lake Kariba, several kilometres away from the one on Tuesday night.

The earthquake slightly increased in intensity to record 3.9 Magnitude on the Richter Scale as against Tuesday’s 3.6.

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) in an update stated that “An earthquake was felt in Kariba this morning the 18th June 2021 at 0735 local time.”

With an area of 5,400 km², Lake Kariba is the world’s largest man-made lake and reservoir by volume.

“Preliminary location shows that the earthquake occurred at Latitude -17.045 S and Longitude 27.941E and the magnitude was determined to be 3.9. The epicentre is in Lake Kariba.”

The last earthquake was inland with no reports of damage. The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) and Meteorological Services Department (MSD) reported that areas around the Dam were hit by five earthquakes in April 2020.

On Monday, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck near Gweru, Midlands Province.Two of the earthquakes measured 4.0 on the Richter scale while the other three were minor ranging from 3.0 to 3.5 in magnitude.
