Another Train Mishap in Egypt Kills Eleven, Injures Ninety-Eight

Eleven people have been declared dead while ninety-eight were left injured in yet another Egyptian train derailment.

The mishap happened in Qalioubia province north of Cairo, the Egyptian capital, according to a statement from the nation’s Ministry of Health.

The train was moving from Cairo to the Nile Delta area of Mansoura when four of its carriages ran off the tracks.

Ambulances arrived right after with at least fifty of them present to transport the injured to the hospital.

In March 2021, a similar accident in Tahta, 440km South of Cairo led to the death of at least 20 people while 200 others were severely injured. In another accident earlier this month, two carriages derailed near Minya Al-Qamh, a city about 70kms north of Cairo.

Egypt has one of the oldest rail networks in Africa, with its operations recorded to have begun since the 19th century.

Locals have called for the replacement of the old trains with some of them as old as 70 years.
