Anthropic has launched what it claims is its most advanced artificial intelligence model to date, with a particular focus on enhancing computer coding capabilities. The San Francisco-based company introduced Claude 3.7 Sonnet alongside a new AI-powered digital agent, Claude Code, which is currently available in a limited research preview for software developers.
Claude Code is designed to assist programmers by searching and analysing code, editing files, running tests, and more. The AI model is backed by Amazon and aims to offer a powerful tool for software development, as AI firms continue to push out innovative products in an increasingly competitive market.
Anthropic co-founder and chief science officer Jared Kaplan stated that the new model excels in coding, particularly when handling complex programming tasks. Beyond improved intelligence, Claude 3.7 Sonnet features a hybrid reasoning model that enables quick responses to straightforward queries while also allowing for deeper analysis of more intricate problems. This enhancement improves Claude’s ability to follow detailed instructions and conduct advanced reasoning, Kaplan explained.

Since OpenAI released ChatGPT in late 2022, the competition to dominate AI development has intensified. Anthropic’s latest launch coincides with the company’s ongoing efforts to finalise a $3.5 billion funding round, which would push its valuation to $61.5 billion, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. However, Anthropic has not commented on the report.
The AI industry is shifting beyond traditional content generation, such as text and images, towards AI-powered “agents” that specialise in specific tasks. OpenAI introduced a ChatGPT variant about six months ago that provided insights into its reasoning process, and Anthropic followed suit with its Claude model, which can interact with computers in a human-like manner. OpenAI recently countered with its first AI agent, Operator, which offers similar functionality.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic continues to compete fiercely in the AI sector. Chief product officer Mike Krieger emphasised that the company prioritises customer-driven improvements, stating, “When it’s just newer, better, faster, it’s not as impactful. We try to hear what people are saying and ensure our next model meets those needs.”
Anthropic has received significant financial backing, with Amazon investing $8 billion and Google’s parent company, Alphabet, contributing $2 billion. As AI innovation accelerates, the battle for dominance in the field remains intense.
