Appeal Court Clears Onnoghen of False Asset Declaration

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has cleared former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, of his conviction for a false asset declaration issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

The Umar Yakubu Danladi tribunal imposed Onnoghen’s conviction on April 18, 2019, but the Appellate Court reversed it after addressing the matters that led to his trial and conviction.

Justice Abba Bello Mohammed, delivering a judgment based on the settlement terms the government and Onnoghen agreed upon, directed that the four bank accounts previously designated for forfeiture be returned to him.

In a short statement, Onnoghen’s legal representatives, Adegboyega Awomolo and Ogwu James Onoja, both Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), expressed their appreciation to President Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) for facilitating the resolution of the matter.
