Apple is reportedly in talks to invest in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT and a major force in generative artificial intelligence, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday. The potential investment comes as OpenAI seeks to raise additional capital to support the heavy costs associated with developing cutting-edge AI technology.
The funding round, led by venture capital firm Thrive Capital, is expected to value OpenAI at around $100 billion, with Thrive Capital contributing $1 billion. Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest investor and a key partner, is also participating in the round.
If confirmed, Apple’s involvement would mark a significant step in its AI ambitions. The tech giant is gearing up to unveil its latest iPhones on September 9, with expectations of AI optimisation. In June, Apple announced that OpenAI’s technology would be available as an option for high-end iPhones, though Apple’s own AI tools will remain central to most user experiences.
Apple has yet to comment on the reported investment.
