The Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit has called for caution as renewed demonstrations demanding civilian rule started on Tuesday in Sudan’s capital Khartoum and major cities like Omdurman and Bahri.
Protesters gathered in Khartoum’s busiest bus station Sharwani, prior to the march to the Republican Palace.
Khartoum State Police earlier announced the closure of the bridges linking the three major cities of Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri as of Monday evening, where military units have been stationed at the entrances of these bridges.
In his intervention, Aboul-Gheit pleaded with all sides in Sudan to reach a consensus through dialogue after Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s resignation in the wake of the political turmoil in the country.
Aboul-Gheit in a statement called on all sides in Sudan “to start a dialogue and to immediately work on reaching a consensus that will preserve all the important gains that have been achieved in the past two years.”
Aboul-Gheit expressed his understanding of Hamdok’s resignation, hailing the accomplishments Hamdok had achieved during his tenure.
Sudanese security forces have erected concrete barricades and barbed wire fencing around the army’s general command headquarters, as well as the routes leading to the presidential palace in Khartoum.
On January 2, Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok announced his resignation in the wake of a political crisis in the country.
Sudan has been smattering through a political impasse after the general commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan declared a state of emergency on October 25, 2021 and dissolved the Sovereign Council and the government.
