The Arab League has issued a unanimous resolution condemning any Israeli actions targeting Iraq, warning that such moves could ignite a broader regional conflict. The resolution was adopted during an emergency meeting on Sunday, held at Iraq’s request over escalating tensions in the region.
The pan-Arab organisation warned of the dangers posed by Israel’s “aggressive practices,” cautioning against actions that could lead to “a broad regional war threatening security and stability.”
Qatari Ambassador to Egypt, Tariq Al-Ansari, emphasised the unanimous support for the resolution as a show of solidarity with Iraq.
The meeting followed Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar’s letter to the UN Security Council, urging action against pro-Iranian militias allegedly using Iraqi territory to launch attacks on Israel. Sa’ar called for the Iraqi government to meet its international obligations to halt these actions.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani responded, warning that Israel’s claims could serve as a pretext for an attack on Iraq.
The resolution comes over Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza, which has reportedly killed over 44,200 people since a Hamas-led attack last year. The violence has spread to Lebanon, with Israeli strikes intensifying against Hezbollah through a year of cross-border skirmishes.
The situation has drawn international scrutiny. The International Criminal Court (ICC) recently issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Separately, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
