Aribo, Balogun Star as Rangers Defeat Celtic in Old Firm Derby

A 70th minute Callum McGregor own goal helped Rangers to a 1-0 victory over Celtic in the Old Firm Derby.

Nigeria’s Leon Balogun and Joe Aribo featured for the Gers in the game. While Balogun featured from start to finish, Aribo was a second half substitute in the encounter.

The victory heightened Rangers’ chances of winning the league title as they widened the gap over their age-long rivals and neighbours.

Both teams, located in Glasgow have won the Scottish League titles for a combined 105 times. They also have both won the Scottish Cup for a combined 70 times and their match is one of the most spoken-about derbies in world football.

Rangers, managed by Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard is top of the log with 62 points, 19 points above Celtic who have three games in hand.

The Gers went into liquidity in 2012, moving to the second division and facing financial struggles but have since bounced back to compete at the top level of Scottish football again.

Aribo and Balogun have been mainstays of the team, with the latter joining during the summer from Wigan Athletic after injuries hampered his Premier League dreams at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Aribo moved to Rangers two seasons ago after impressing at Charlton Athletic and has been tipped to make a move to the Premier League.

Celtic have struggled all season and sit second behind Rangers on the log, with only a sharp decline in the form of their rivals expected to make a difference.
