An unknown number of armed men shelled the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) along Owerri Port Harcourt road in Imo State, Southeast Nigeria in the early hours of Monday.
The gunmen shot grenades through the commission’s fence, wrecking several offices and vehicles parked within the facility
The police stationed at the INEC office battled the assailants in a heavy shootout, leaving three of the gunmen wearing charms and Biafra camouflages dead.
Suspected miscreants had similarly torched the commission’s offices in Ebonyi, Osun and Ogun States within the past four weeks, sparking fears that some people were plotting to derail the conduct of the 2023 elections.
The Spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Mike Abattam, said the gunmen numbering over 10 came around 3am with petrol bombs and dynamite. INEC public relations officer, Dr. Chinenye Chijioke-Osuji also confirmed the attack.
