The Nigerian Army has uncovered a secret armoury at the home of a suspected gun runner in Delta State, Southern Nigeria. The operation carried out in the region successfully exposed a cache of illegal weapons and ammunition.
In a statement released by the headquarters of the Nigerian Army online, the military institution said that its soldiers had found weapons and ammunition in the armoury in Olota and other nearby settlements in the Ughelli South Local Government area of Delta state.
It stated that soldiers had stormed the secret arsenal after receiving a tip. According to the Army, the armoury was hidden in the home of the man who was suspected of being a gun runner, Mr Kenneth.
The Army also stated that three suspects were arrested in connection with the crime.
One G3 rifle, 853 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, and 19 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition were discovered at the location.
“Additionally, the troops recovered 5 locally fabricated Guns, a large plastic bag containing substance suspected to be cannabis sativa, and two Speed Boats with 75 Horsepower outboard engines. The troops also apprehended three suspects during the operation” the army said in the statement.
Earlier, News Central reported that 17 soldiers were killed in Okuama community in Delta State.
The operation comes as response of the Nigerian Army to the state of crime and arms proliferation in the region as well as the ongoing investigation into the murder of military personnel in the state.
