Mikel Arteta has expressed his belief that winning the League Cup could provide Arsenal with the momentum needed to secure further silverware as he celebrates his fifth anniversary at the helm.
Since taking charge in 2019, Arteta guided the club to an FA Cup victory in 2020, but the Gunners have not added any more major trophies to their collection, despite coming close in recent seasons.
Arsenal, runners-up in the Premier League for the past two years, are currently third in the top flight, six points behind leaders Liverpool, having played one game more.
On Wednesday, Arteta’s side faces Crystal Palace in the League Cup quarter-finals, three days before meeting the same opponents in the league. Arteta is keen to use a cup run as a springboard to greater success.
Arteta highlighted the significance of winning the League Cup for Arsenal, a club that has not won the Premier League since 2004.
“It brings belief, trust, positive energy,” he said. “Touching a cup, beating someone in the semi-final, reaching the final—it generates that energy. I think it sets the right path for bigger things, especially considering the timing of the competition. It builds momentum.”
The League Cup final will be held at Wembley on March 16, 2025.
Arteta, who took over as manager in December 2019, said he would decide the best team to win it when asked about the potential for rotation ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Palace.
“We’ll decide that in the morning in relation to how the squad is, obviously the relevance of the match and where we are in the quarter-finals, it becomes a very important match,” Arteta explained.
