Some unidentified gunmen have killed Thabo Ngwenya, an African National Congress (ANC) councillor in the Nkomazi Local Municipality in Mpumalanga.
Four armed suspects attacked a 35-year-old in Mangweni last night and fled with Ngwenya’s car, cell phones and other belongings.
Police Spokesperson Donald Mdhluli said that four unknown armed suspects wearing balaclavas entered the councillor’s home before shooting him.
“They entered the house and found the 35-year-old man with his wife. They removed the balaclavas before they shot him twice. A report was given that the wife was assaulted.
“They then left and took some cellphones, as well as his bakkie and fled the scene. The man was then rushed to a nearby hospital and, unfortunately, he later succumbed to his injuries. We are investigating a case of murder and robbery,” Mdhluli said.
Ngwenya was also a Chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee in the Nkomazi Municipality.
“They reportedly took cellphones, a Toyota GD6 bakkie – charcoal in colour and fled the scene. They have not yet been arrested. The man was rushed by a private man to the nearest hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. A team of investigators under the leadership of the provincial commissioner are expected to probe this matter with the goal to arrest the perpetrators.”
In March, an Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Ward councillor and two students were killed in the Nongoma Municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal
