Aston Villa Seal Deal for Everton Midfielder Amadou Onana

Aston Villa have secured the signing of Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana from Everton in a deal reportedly worth £50 million ($64 million) on Monday.

Onana has penned a five-year contract with Villa, who were in search of a replacement for Douglas Luiz following the Brazilian’s transfer to Juventus.

Amadou Onana was born in Dakar, Senegal to a Senegalese mother and a Cameroonian father. The 22-year-old struggled to make a significant impact at Everton after his move from Lille two years ago. However, after featuring for Belgium at Euro 2024, Onana has been given the opportunity to rejuvenate his Premier League career under Villa manager Unai Emery.

“Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Amadou Onana from Everton,” the club stated on their website.

Capped 17 times by Belgium, Onana made 72 appearances for Everton, netting four goals. He joins Villa as the club prepares for their first Champions League campaign since 1983, following last season’s fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

It has been a busy close season for Emery, who has already signed Ross Barkley from Luton, Juventus duo Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea, Sheffield United’s Cameron Archer, Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, former Hull winger Jaden Philogene, and Everton’s Lewis Dobbin.

Both Villa and Everton have been balancing their squads to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.
