French authorities have reported that a boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized in the English Channel, leading to the tragic loss of at least 12 lives, with two individuals still unaccounted for and several others sustaining injuries, as stated by Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.
The French coast guards rescued over 50 individuals off the Gris-Nez cape, and medical staff provided necessary treatment to the survivors.
This devastating incident marks the highest number of fatalities in the English Channel this year, adding to the toll of at least 37 lives lost out of over 20,000 individuals who have attempted to make the crossing.
Mr Darmanin expressed his dismay over the “Terrible shipwreck in Pas-de-Calais” and assured that emergency services are diligently working to locate the missing individuals and provide aid to the victims.
