At least 16 people were killed after a passenger bus collided with a parked truck on a highway in the Sudanese city of Omdurman early on Tuesday, according to police.

According to a police statement, the bus veered off the road and struck a parked vehicle in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital, Khartoum. According to officials, the incident harmed at least 19 persons.

According to authorities, the bus was traveling from Fasher, the capital city of the province of North Darfur, to Khartoum. The injured were transferred to the Omdurman hospital by ambulances as the dead were taken to the morgue. No immediate information was available regarding what caused the bus to veer.

Sudan has a high rate of traffic accidents, which are frequently caused by poorly maintained roads and poor traffic rule enforcement. Thousands of individuals perish in traffic accidents each year.

Meanwhile, on Monday, at least 10 persons were killed and five more injured when a passenger bus hit a landmine in eastern Burkina Faso on Christmas Day.

The bus was on its way from the market town of Fada N’Gourma, which is located around 220 kilometres from the country’s capital Ouagadougou, to the border town of Kantchari in the vicinity of the neighboring Niger.
