Dar-es-Salaam regional police commander Lazaro Mambosasa announced on Tuesday that at least 45 people died during a stampede at the Uhuru Stadium on March 21 while citizens paid their last respects to the country’s late President John Magufuli.
Mambosasa noted there had been tens of thousands of mourners who wanted to get in the stadium impatiently. They tried to force their way in and that resulted in a stampede.
The stampede also injured 37 people who have now been discharged from hospital after treatment.
Tanzania’s former president John Magufuli died from a short mysterious illness that was announced by the government on March 17, 2021.
Mourners wept and threw flower petals as his casket was transferred by military motorcade from a church to Uhuru Stadium.
