Atletico Madrid endured a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Real Betis on Sunday, with Jose Gimenez’s own goal just minutes into the match sealing the result. Diego Simeone’s side now trails league leaders Barcelona by 10 points, dropping to fourth place in La Liga.
Betis climbed to fifth with their spirited performance at Benito Villamarin, pressing relentlessly and showcasing a confident, attacking style. Despite a late surge from Atletico, including two attempts that struck the woodwork, Betis held on for the win.
Betis took the lead when Gimenez inadvertently turned Ez Abde’s cross into his own net in the fourth minute. Abde, who was a constant threat, struck the crossbar and saw another effort go wide, while his teammate Vitor Roque missed narrowly from a tight angle. Atletico’s attempts to equalize fell short, with Angel Correa hitting the post and crossbar in quick succession.
Late drama saw Roque’s goal ruled out for offside, but Betis celebrated the final whistle as Atletico’s faltering form continued.
