Aubameyang Scores in Arsenal 2-0 FA Win over Newcastle

Published

on

Arsenal’s Gabonese import, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, was on target as Mikel Arteta’s side began their FA Cup defence with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday.

Aubameyang goal came in the final minutes of extra time after Emile Smith-Rowe 109th minute strike.

Smith-Rowe, who arrived as a second half substitute in the third round match, had a red card rescinded for a tackle on Sean Longstaff in stoppage time following a VAR review.

The 20-year-old midfielder went on to score the opener as he latched on to a ball from Alexandre Lacazette inside the box before slipping it past Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Aubameyang also found the net from close range in the final minutes of extra time to extend Arsenal’s winning run to four games in all competitions.

“I was really happy, a bit of a relief for me with the incident before,” Smith-Rowe said.

“It definitely wasn’t intentional —— happy to get the goal and get through to the next round.

“We knew how tough it was going to be, they’re a tough opponent. It was about breaking them down.

“It shows how together we are, we have been working off the pitch to get closer as a group and it shows.”

Arsenal, who have lifted the FA Cup a record 14 times, have failed to progress to the fourth round just once in the last quarter of a century.

Arsenal created the majority of the chances through forwards Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe but the hosts were denied an opening in 90 minutes at the Emirates Stadium.

Striker Andy Carroll missed the target from inside the six-yard box in the 56th minute before his efforts on goal in stoppage time were brilliantly blocked by Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

“I thought Andy did fantastically well, if he had topped it off by scoring a goal it would have been good for him,” Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce said.

“A lot of pleasing things, we’ve had a tough run of fixtures but we dust ourselves down and go again.”

The result left Newcastle United without a win in seven games in all competitions.

Cameroon’s Joel Embiid Creates New Record for Philadelphia

Published

on

Cameroon’s Joel Embiid has become the first Philadelphia 76ers player to record 45 points, more than 15 rebounds and over 5 steals in a single game since 1974.

Embiid, who played college basketball with the Kansas Jayhawks, created the record in Philadelphia’s 137-134 defeat of Miami Heats.

The Cameroonian 2014 draft for Philadelphia has so far had a good season with fans of the 76ers hailing his work rate and aggression.

Embiid’s teammate, Danny Green also created a franchise record of nine-three pointers from his total of 29 points.

The Cameroonian impressed and was all over the court as fans are already mouthing a possible MVP nomination for him.

“I’ve got a goal. I want to win the championship and I can’t do it alone,” Embiid said.

Nigeria’s Gabe Vincent and Precious Achiuwa impressed for Miami in the game with Vincent scoring 24 points in his first career start, while Achiuwa made his first start since being drafted in the top 30 picks during the off season.

Achiuwa, born in Port Harcourt, Southern Nigeria, scored 17 points and 13 rebounds in what’s the highest of his freshly-starting NBA career.

Algeria’s Slimani Joins Lyon on a Free Transfer

Published

on

Algerian forward, Islam Slimani, has signed for Lyon on a free transfer, the French club has announced.

Slimani, who scored 13 goals in 47 games in all competitions for Leicester, joins Lyon on an 18-month contract.

“I’m very happy and proud to join a big club like Lyon,” Slimani said.

“I’ve joined a team that’s top of the league, playing well and scoring goals. I want to help the club achieve its objectives.”

“I’m very happy and proud to join a big club like Lyon. I thank the president. When I was a child, I came to the area, to Givors, to play in tournaments with my team. I’m a combative person who gives everything on the pitch.”

He added: “Lyon is a big club and near the top of the table every season, playing to participate in the Champions League.

“I spoke to Djamel Benlamri a lot. He told me a lot of good things about the club, the players and the coach. I’m here to help the team. Even if I start as a substitute, get in the game and help the team, the coach won’t let me sit on the bench.”

Slimani, 32, began his professional career in his native country. After four successful seasons at CR Belouizdad, he left Algeria to join Sporting Club de Portugal in 2013. In Portugal, he spent three seasons and in his final season he scored 27 goals in 33 league appearances.

In 2016, Slimani joined Leicester City where he formed a very complementary duo with Riyad Mahrez. After the departure of Claudio Ranieri from the Foxes, the Algerian international played less and went out on loan.

In 2019, Slimani won the Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria.
