After the destruction caused by Cyclone Freddy in neighboring Mozambique, the authorities in Malawi have closed schools in 10 districts due to safety concerns.
Roads in southern Malawi have been swept away by torrential rains, which have also interfered with electricity generation. More rain is predicted in the coming days.
Monday and Tuesday are off for physical education in all local educational institutions.
According to a statement from the education ministry, teachers and students have been urged to utilise the online resources and radio classes that are accessible.
“When physical classes resume teachers are urged to provide remedial lessons to recover the lost time,” it added.
Due to Cyclone Freddy making landfall on Sunday for the second time in a month, neighboring Mozambique has seen more rainfall in the last four weeks than it did in an entire year.
During the storm’s initial landfall, Mozambique has seen at least 28 fatalities.
