The Coalition of Concerned Citizens of Kaduna has called on residents to refrain from participating in the proposed nationwide protest scheduled for October 1 themed #FearlessInOctober.
Organisers of the protest say it aims to address the current economic hardship in the country.
The coalition, at a press briefing held in Kaduna on Monday, urged citizens to prioritise dialogue over destructive demonstrations.
Comrade Yusuf Lawal, spokesperson for the organisation, stressed that previous protests, such as the #EndBadGovernance movement, resulted in destruction of property and loss of lives in various states.
“The recent protests, particularly the ‘End Bad Governance’ demonstrations, led to significant vandalism and tragic loss of lives, including the heartbreaking death of a young man from Zaria.
“The economic repercussions for businesses and communities have been severe, diverting essential resources that could otherwise have been invested in development and social services,” he said.
Lawal emphasised that October 1, Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary, should be a day of celebration and reflection, honouring the sacrifices made by the nation’s heroes. He urged the public to avoid actions that could lead to further destruction of both public and private property.
“October 1st should serve as a day of celebration, honouring the sacrifices and contributions of our past heroes. It’s a day to reflect on our collective journey as a state and a nation, not one marked by the destruction of government and private property or civil unrest,” he stated.
Lawal encouraged Kaduna residents to continue with their normal activities on Independence Day, rather than joining protests that might result in chaos and violence.
The group acknowledged that the current government had its flaws but argued that time should be given for it to fulfil its promises.
The coalition’s appeal comes as protests have been proposed in various parts of the country to express dissatisfaction with the current economic situation.
