Flagbearer of Nigeria’s Opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has said Senator Iyioricha Ayu, the party’s Nation Chairman cannot be forced to step down as the National Chairman.
Coming hours after the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party deepened on Wednesday as Governor Nyesom Wike’s team pulled out of Atiku’s campaign council., Atiku maintained that he has no control over Ayu’s next move.
In reaction to the camp of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, the former Vice President said, “On the calls for the resignation or removal from office of our national chairman, however, I must reiterate what I have said severally in public and in private; the decision for Dr. Iyorchia Ayu to resign from office is personal to Dr. Ayu and, neither I nor anyone else can make that decision for him.”
Atiku Abubakar called for joint efforts in dismantling structures threatening unity in Nigeria and among Nigerians.
The Wike camp insist that the PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, must resign for them to rescind their decision.
In a series of tweets to commemorate the International Day of Peace 2022, Atiku said there can only be peace when there is unity.
“As we commemorate the International Day of Peace 2022, we are reminded that only with unity can there be peace and that we all play a vital role in fostering it.
“Rather than fuel conflicts amongst ourselves, it is crucial that we jointly dismantle the structures that entrench these conflicts in our midst. -AA,” he tweeted.
