Bandits Release 279 of 317 Schoolgirls Abducted in Zamfara, Northern Nigeria

No fewer than 279 of the 317 girls abducted by gunmen from a boarding school in Zamfara State, Northern Nigeria have been released.

News of their release was confirmed on Tuesday by Yusuf Idris, the media aide to Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara.

Idris did not state if any ransom was paid for their release nor why the 38 remaining girls are still being held in captivity. He, however, requested more time to provide details on the remaining 38 girls.

Meanwhile, the released schoolgirls are currently at the Zamfara government house waiting to be reunited with their parents.

About 100 gunmen had stormed the Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Friday, 26 February 2021 at about 1a.m, attacked the students’ hostel and marched the girls to the bush.
