Barcelona midfielder Gavi is to return to action for La Liga leaders against Sevilla this weekend, following a lengthy injury layoff. Head coach Hansi Flick confirmed the news during a press conference on Saturday.
The 20-year-old has been sidelined since suffering a severe knee injury while representing Spain in November 2023, causing him to miss his country’s Euro 2024 victory this summer.
Gavi, known for his tenacity, broke into Barcelona’s first team in the 2021-22 season and became Spain’s youngest-ever player at 17. However, he was later overtaken by his Barcelona teammate, Lamine Yamal.
Barcelona will also see the return of Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez, who have recovered from recent injuries. Flick further confirmed that teenage star Lamine Yamal is fit to play after overcoming a minor hamstring problem.
However, Flick mentioned that Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who recently returned from an ankle injury, experienced discomfort in training, casting doubt on his availability for Sunday’s match at the club’s temporary Olympic stadium.
Despite these returns, Barcelona still have key players sidelined, including Ronald Araujo, Ferran Torres, and Andreas Christensen.
