Barcelona’s head coach, Xavi Hernandez, is approaching Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 encounter against Napoli with caution, considering the challenge posed by the Italian side’s recent change in leadership.
Following the dismissal of Walter Mazzarri, Napoli swiftly appointed Slovakia’s Francesco Calzona as their new coach, just 48 hours before facing Barcelona.
In a press conference on the eve of the match, Xavi acknowledged the complexity of preparing for Napoli under new management, emphasising the uncertainty surrounding their tactical approach.
He stressed the importance of focusing on Barcelona’s own style of play and their objective of progressing to the quarterfinals.
Xavi also highlighted the offensive threat posed by Napoli’s trio of Victor Osimhen, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Matteo Politano.
Despite Napoli’s managerial change, Xavi rejected the notion of Barcelona being clear favourites, asserting that the outcome would determine the favourite.
Xavi, who announced his decision to step down as Barcelona’s coach at the end of the season, reiterated his commitment to motivating his team in the face of constant pressure.
Barcelona, with five Champions League titles to their name, aim to overcome their recent struggles in the competition and advance past the last 16 stage, having been eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.
