Nigerian film ‘Battle on Buka Street’ has grossed over $61,000 in US cinemas, despite opening in only 11 locations over the 4-day New Year Weekend.

The movie, which was directed by Funke Akindele, and distributed by FilmOne and Part Two Media in the United States, with support from Amplify Africa, was released on December 30th and became the first ever Indigenous Nollywood release in the United States.

Meanwhile, in Nigeria, Battle on Buka Street is the number one movie at the box office, earning over N360 million in three weeks.

Following its wide acceptance, Craig Shurn Of Part Two Media said they always knew that ‘Battle on Buka Street’ had the potential to do well in the US.

According to him, its blockbuster results and status in Nigeria were determinant, but they never expected these figures for the first Nollywood release in the U.S.

It tells the story of two women who find themselves at odds again, after a long-time rivalry when they start food businesses on the same street. The cast includes Funke Akindele, Mercy Johnson, Femi Jacobs, Bimbo Ademoye, Sola Sobowale,Nkem Owoh, Tina Mba, Femi Jacobs among others.

Due to its strong demand and sell-out shows, Regal Cinemas have added another 11 locations on the second week of the film.

Following this Funke Akindele release, FilmOne and Regal cinemas are set to release Toyin Abraham’s Ijakumo: Born Again Stripper on January 13 in the U.K and US.
