Bayern Munich winger Jamal Musiala faces a “long period” on the sidelines after sustaining a broken fibula and an ankle dislocation during the Club World Cup quarter-final loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.
The German champions confirmed the severe injury on Sunday.
The 22-year-old German international was injured in a collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
While Bayern coach Vincent Kompany called it an “accident,” goalkeeper Manuel Neuer sharply criticised Donnarumma’s actions as “reckless.”
“Real Shock” for Bayern and the German National Team
Musiala was flown back to Munich on Sunday morning and is scheduled for surgery soon.
Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, expressed the club’s profound dismay: “This serious injury and the lengthy layoff are a real shock for Jamal and us all.

This hits FC Bayern.” Eberl emphasised Musiala’s crucial role in the team and extended full support for his recovery, noting the human impact, especially since Musiala had just returned from a hamstring tear.
German media reports suggest Musiala could be out for four to five months, potentially returning just before the end of the year.
His absence will be a significant blow for both Bayern and the German national team, particularly as their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign kicks off in September.
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann also voiced his shock and wished Musiala a speedy recovery.
This latest injury follows a hamstring tear that kept Musiala out of Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final and Germany’s Nations League squad.
He had just made a strong return for the Club World Cup, even scoring a hat-trick in Bayern’s opening 10-0 victory over Auckland City.
