Authorities in Sudan briefly arrested three BBC journalists on Monday as thousands of citizens gathered across the country to stage anti-coup protests.

The media outlet in a report disclosed that its reporters working with the Arabic Service were arrested and whisked to an unknown location. It however said authorities released the three journalists late Monday.

This development comes amid demonstrations in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, and other parts of the country, with security operatives firing live ammunition and tear gas, and rubber to disperse the protesters, particularly around the Presidential palace.

About 200 protests were injured, including at least 12 across the capital who sustained gunshot wounds. There were no deaths reported.

The protest which rocked most parts of Sudan comes in the latest of unrelenting agitations following the military takeover on October 25, 2021, which ousted the civilian-led government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.
