Bendel Insurance triumphed 2-1 over Plateau United on Matchday 15 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Saturday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State.
The game kicked off with Bendel Insurance taking the lead in the 7th minute through a brilliant header from Uche Collins, who latched onto a precise cross from Julius Emiloju on the left flank.
Plateau United was presented with an opportunity to level the scores in the 15th minute after a mistake by Bendel Insurance’s Nnamdi Anthony led to a penalty. Olawale Doyeni stepped up to take the spot kick, but his effort struck the woodwork, leaving the score at 1-0.
However, Plateau United’s persistence paid off in the 24th minute when Victor Dawa unleashed a long-range shot that was slightly deflected by Dennis Chigozie, deceiving Joshua Baba in goal and bringing the visitors level.
In the second half, Bendel Insurance dominated possession and created several chances. Their efforts were rewarded in the 66th minute when Isaac Annor delivered a free kick that found Kayode Oke, who expertly headed the ball into the net to restore the lead. This goal would prove to be the matchwinner.
Bendel Insurance head coach Greg Ikhenoba expressed satisfaction after the match, emphasising the importance of the win as they continue their fight to escape the relegation zone.
Looking ahead, Bendel Insurance will face a tough challenge with two away fixtures against Akwa United and Heartland FC in the coming weeks.
