Benni McCarthy Makes History With Amazulu FC

Benny McCarthy has made history with Amazulu.

South African football legend, Benni McCarthy has helped local side Amazulu FC to qualify for their first ever CAF Champions League group stages after overcoming favourites, TP Mazembe.

Amazulu earned a 1-1 draw at the TP Mazembe Stadium in the Democratic Republic of Congo, against the expectations of many. The South Africans qualified on the away goal rule and has been the talking point of African football.

McCarthy had an illustrious football career in Europe representing FC Porto as winning the Champions League in 2004. He also played for Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League and was a decent attacker in his heyday.

The former Bafana Bafana attacker will hope to replicate Kaizer Chiefs’ achievements last year when they made it to the final of the Champions League before losing to Al Ahly.

Usuthu did not win their home games during qualifying but were decent on the road and are now in the group stage of the competition for the first time.

Goalkeeper Veli Mothwa was in impressive form in both legs of the encounter which was dominated by TP Mazembe for large spells.
