Tunisia’s Foreign Minister Othman Jerandi has called on the international community to act urgently to support the Libyan authority in this transitional phase and avoid possible setbacks which, he warned, will have serious implications on the stability of the region and the world.
While on the floor on Wednesday at the Berlin 2 conference, which was attended by a high-level Libyan delegation led by Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbiba and a large number of foreign ministers.
Jerandi said that the Libyan government is in a transitional phase, warning that with terrorist groups active in the Sahel and Sahara regions, the country risks a situation that may destabilise neighbouring countries through gun running, human trafficking, irregular migration and other related crimes.
UNSMIL head, Jan Kubis praised the collective efforts of all member states, regional and international organisations to assist the Libyan people in their quest for unity, peace, stability, and prosperity for their future generations.
“This conference represents an important opportunity to renew the international community’s commitment to Libya’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” Special Envoy Kubis said.
In line with the Berlin Conference II Conclusions and the UN Security Council Resolution 2570 (2021), holding the national elections on 24 December 2021 and the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement is imperative for the stability of Libya.
On his part, Algerian Foreign Minister, Sabri Boukadoum stressed the urgent need to end foreign interference in Libya and to respect the previous commitments made in this regard. The European Union, also issued a statement expressing optimism over the Libya Peace Process.
