Biden Appoints Nigerian As Acting Director of U.S. Trade and Development Agency

President of the United States, Joe Biden has appointed yet another Nigerian-American in his government.

Biden, who took over as President on the 20th of January appointed Enoh Titilayo Ebong as the Acting Director of the United States Trade and Development Agency.

Ebong is the fourth Nigerian to be appointed by Biden since his inauguration.

The USTDA performs many roles, but is primarily expected to link the United States to trade opportunities both locally and internationally.

Ebong said during her swearing-in ceremony that she feels proud and motivated to be handling the US trade at such a critical time in the history of the country. She said the rest of the world is looking towards the US for leadership in I.T, climate-smart and secure infrastructure and economic growth.

About Enoh T. Ebong

Ebong was born to Nigerian parents and grew up in Lagos State. Her father is a former Permanent Secretary at the Lagos State Ministry of Economic Development and Reconstruction.

Her father is known to have masterminded partnerships with many American companies and played a key role in how his daughter joined the US Trade and Development Agency. Her interest is to help grow partnerships with foreign companies in order to help mitigate against development challenges in Nigeria.

She was until her appointment a Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer at the USTDA.

She led a team of Staff of the USTDA responsible for ensuring the programmes run by the agency are achieved.

After joining the agency as an attorney-advisor in 2004, she has served in various roles including as acting Regional Director for sub-Saharan Africa, Deputy General Counsel and General Counsel. She also worked as the chief legal officer of the agency.

In her previous role, she provided authoritative legal advice and direction on all USTDA program and operations activities.

A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, she holds a Master of Arts in Communication from the Annenberg School of Communication, University of Pennsylvania. She also holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School.

Ebong also holds a Masters in History (honour) from the University from the University of Edinburgh.

Recall that Biden had appointed three other Nigerians before Obong.

Adewale ‘Wally’ Adeyemo had been appointed Deputy Secretary of the US Treasury; Osaremen Okolo was appointed a member of the COVID-19 response team as Policy Advisor, while Funmi Olorunnipa Badejo was appointed a member of the White House Counsel.
