Morocco and Egypt crowned Africa Beach Volleyball Cup champions
Morocco’s Abicha Mohammed and Elgraoui Zouheir beat Rwanda’s Patrick Kavalo Akumuntu and Olivier Ntagengwa 2-0 (21-15, 21-16) in the men’s final.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s two-time Olympian, Doaa Elghobashy and 2019 best blocker of the Africa Club championship, Farida El Askalany defeated Mauritius 2-0 (21-15, 21-16) in the women’s final.
Ghana’s Richard Lartey lost to Daniel Dubois in heavyweight fight at Wembley.
Ghanaian heavyweight, Richard Lartey lost for only the second time in his career, after he was knocked out by British heavyweight prospect, Daniel Dubois in a Saturday night slugfest at the Wembley Arena.
Lartey bravely stood his ground at times and traded with Dubois, landing some stiff shots that forced back the 21-year-old contender.
But in the fourth round, Dubois connected with a huge right hand that dropped Lartey, who struggled to get to his feet and the fight was waved off.
Dubois improves to 11 wins from 11 fights with 10 coming via knockout, while Lartey now has a record of 14 wins and 2 losses with 11 KOs to his credit.
Cameroon clinch second U-17 AFCON title
Cameroon won the 2019 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday after they defeated Guinea 5-3 on penalties in the final at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Both teams failed to convert any of their chances as the match ended 0-0 in regulation time. The win is Cameroon’s second U-17 Nations Cup title, having previously been African Champions in 2003. Angola beat Nigeria 2-1 in the third-place match. All four teams have qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup holding in Brazil later in the year.
However, Guinea are still waiting to hear what CAF’s disciplinary Committee will decide after Senegal and Nigeria both protested that Guinea had used ineligible players. If the decision goes against Guinea, they could lose their World Cup place.
Home teams in good form as CAF club competitions semi finals begin
Wydad Casablanca defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in their CAF Champions League semi-final first leg match on Friday. The two clubs have met seven times in three seasons and six of the matches have resulted in one-goal winning margins for the home side. The other was drawn.
In the other semi-final defending champions, Esperance edged TP Mazembe 1-0.
In CAF Confederations Cup semi-final first leg encounters, Zamalek edged Etoile due Sahel 1-0 while CS Sfaxien defeated RSB Berkane 2-0.
Kenya’s Eluid Kipchoge wins record fourth London Marathon
Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge has won the London Marathon, to become the first man to win the event four times while setting a new course record in the process.
Kipchoge finished ahead of the Ethiopian duo of Mosinet Geremew and Mule Wasihun while four-time Olympic track champion Mo Farah was fifth.
