A bill aimed at amending the Federal Colleges of Education Act of 2003 to establish the Federal College of Education (Special) in Dukku, Gombe State, north-eastern Nigeria, has successfully undergone its first reading in the House of Representatives.

Sponsored by Hon. Abdullahi El-Rasheed, the bill proposes the establishment of a college within Dukku Federal Constituency with the primary objective of enhancing educational opportunities, particularly for individuals with physical challenges.

El-Rasheed emphasised that the proposed college would significantly contribute to addressing the educational needs of individuals with disabilities, filling a crucial gap in Nigeria’s educational landscape. He noted that currently, there is only one such institution in the country, located in Oyo State, which is unable to adequately cater to the growing demand for specialised education.

Highlighting the necessity of establishing the Federal College of Education (Special) in Dukku, El-rasheed stressed the importance of providing trained teachers capable of instructing individuals with disabilities, particularly those requiring sign language education. He added that the existing institution in Oyo State is overburdened and unable to meet the needs of students across Nigeria.
