Ugandan activist and former parliamentarian Bobi Wine has announced his candidacy for the presidential election scheduled for January 12, 2026.
In the previous election in 2021, President Yoweri Museveni, representing the National Resistance Movement party (NRM), secured over 58% of the vote, while Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform party (NUP) received over 35% of the vote.
Museveni subsequently accused Wine’s party of engaging in electoral fraud, saying it cheated by one million votes in areas where the electronic voting system malfunctioned. Bobi Wine’s party, however, refuted Museveni’s accusations.
President Museveni, 80, says that his leadership ensures continuity, experience, and stability while Bobi Wine is campaigning on a mantra of “change for a generation who is hungry and angry.”
