The family of Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti, a 24-year-old activist, has confirmed his death after his body was discovered at Thika Level 5 Hospital mortuary on January 2, 2025.
Mwiti had been missing since November 2024, leaving his family and friends in distress as they searched for him.
Mwiti, who worked as a delivery rider in Nairobi, was last seen in the city centre before disappearing under mysterious circumstances.
His family filed a missing person report at Kamukunji Police Station in mid-November, but their search ended tragically when they found his body in the mortuary two months later.
His mother, Sadhiya Iman, said they were informed that Mwiti died in a hit-and-run accident, but little information was provided about the incident.
“I have looked at his body and it looks like a case of hit and run though I have heard rumours circulating on certain blogs intimating that he was abducted and killed,” she said during his burial at Lang’ata Cemetery on Friday, January 3.
Close friends and activists, however, questioned the hit-and-run claim, suggesting foul play. Prince Baha, an activist who helped in the search, said they believe Mwiti was abducted and killed.
“The motorbike he was riding when he was involved in an accident was found and taken to a police station but no one at the station took the number plates and searched at the National Transport Safety and Authority (NTSA) to know the details of next of kin and inform them. We read foul play in this narrative that it was a hit a run, it’s not just adding up,” Baha said at the burial.
“We went to Kamukunji and Juja but did not find him. We recently got a call from Thika Morgue that his body was in the mortuary.
“We did not get a post morterm because of religion but I am sure that his death was not caused by a hit-and -run accident,” he added.
Mwiti’s disappearance and death come at a time when Kenya has witnessed an increase in abduction cases.
Human rights organisations report dozens of similar cases in recent months, with concerns growing over the safety of young people.
Mwiti’s death has angered Kenyans who are demanding accountability, with many urging the government to address the rising cases of mysterious disappearances.
